Happy 24th B-Day, Akron’s Own Larry Nance Jr.!
AKRON, OH (TM216) — It ain’t easy being the son of a legend, so on his birthday, we celebrate the man who has done it and then some. Happy 24th Birthday to Akron native and current Los Angeles Laker, Larry Nance Jr.
At 6 foot 7 inches tall, Larry doesn’t exactly blend in with the crowd. The question “do you play basketball” likely rang a familiar tune while walking around Revere High School in the late 2000’s. But when your last name is Nance and you’re growing up in the shadows of the former home arena of the Cleveland Cavaliers, The Richfield Coliseum, there are big shoes to fill.
You see, the same year that Jr. was born, 1993, his father Larry Nance Sr. was selected to his third NBA All-Star game. One of the greatest Cavaliers to ever lace up a pair of sneakers, Larry Nance Sr. is still to this day leaving a legacy on the team. His #22 jersey is retired and hanging high above the new home court of the Cavaliers in Quicken Loans Arena. Although Sr. spent his time wearing wine and gold in the Richfield days.
However in the mid-90’s when the Cleveland Cavaliers moved their home from Richfield to Cleveland’s then Gund Arena, the Nance family moved from NBA arenas to local gymnasiums. Larry Nance Jr taking to the court at a far less assuming height.
On the freshman basketball team at Revere, Jr. measured in at a far less imposing 5’11”. He played point guard…. and he grew. By the time senior year rolled around, Larry would be standing a whopping 6’7” and averaged more than eighteen points per game.
Those impressive stats caught the eye of the Mountain West Conference and Wyoming. During his four year career in the mountains, Nance found much success. Twice selected to the all conference team, twice selected to the all defensive team, and ultimately being named the conference player of the year in 2015.
From there it was time to fulfill a destiny, the NBA was calling, as were the bright lights of the big city. Los Angeles, California, and the LA Lakers.
The pride of Revere High School is on the big stage. Now at just 24-years old, is already one of the shining stars of northern Ohio.
Happy Birthday to Los Angeles Laker, Revere alum, Ohioan, and much more, Larry Nance Jr.
